Here we are, one of my favourite subjects, the dreaded dishwasher. They come in all shapes and sizes from table top to slimline and on to full size 14+ place setting versions, freestanding, in cupboards or fully integrated. When I was learning my trade years ago the boss of one of the companies I was working for knew that I hated working on dishwashers and subsequently used to always send me to them, especially the built in ones. I thought he was being unfair at the time but now realise he was actually doing me a favour. By having the choice taken away from me I was forced to learn what I didn’t really want to learn, but in the long run it was very beneficial to me. As you may already have found out in your search for a suitable repair company, not all independent domestic repair agents had my good fortune and as a consequence many refuse to call out to certain brands or in some cases ANY dishwashers especially full size integrated ones.
Unlike the run of the mill washing machine or tumble dryer, both of which have been common place in UK kitchens for well over 50 years, comparitively, only a few years ago the dishwasher was still considered to be somewhat of a luxury item. So it always makes me smile when I hear the horror stories about how "I can’t cope without my dishwasher,” but then who am I to criticize, I’ve got one and wouldn’t like to be without it for very long.
The dishwasher repair is something of a one off, different animal as in a lot of cases proper routine maintenance, care and attention can virtually illuminate the chance of breakdown but when they do go wrong they can be very awkward to work on, with sometimes complex and difficult to diagnose faults.

With regards to the purchase of new dishwashers, as with all appliances there are a few manufacturing brands I would definitely avoid for reliability and spare part cost reasons, but other than that it is really down to personal choice as with proper use, care and attention they all clean dishes to a good standard. Refer to the washing machine page for my thoughts on best ways to choose new dishwashers as the principles are very much the same.
